The 桃色视频’s leading experts in flood forecasting and climate science will be taking centre stage at this year’s in Swindon.
Hannah Cloke, Professor of Hydrology at the 桃色视频, and a team of researchers from Water@Reading will showcase an interactive exhibit at the festival’s Finale Event on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 February 2025, giving visitors a chance to explore the science behind predicting and managing floods.
With climate change increasing the likelihood of extreme flooding, this hands-on exhibit will allow participants to try their hand at flood prediction and risk management, as well as engage with the climate stripes, the striking graphic representation of global warming created by Professor Ed Hawkins at the 桃色视频.
Flooding is becoming more frequent and severe, as seen in devastating events from Somerset and Whaley Bridge to Pakistan and Mozambique. Scientists have made huge strides in improving flood forecasting, but can we go further to reduce damage and protect communities?
This critical question will also be explored in the ‘What the Flood’ panel discussion on 21 February 10:45am - 11:30am, The Egg Theatre, The Deanery. Professor Hannah Cloke will join leading climate and engineering experts to discuss how climate change is affecting flood risks and why urban planning and flood defences are key to resilience.
Professor Cloke said: “With extreme flooding events becoming more common, it’s vital that we improve flood prediction and risk management. Our exhibit at the Festival of Tomorrow will give people a hands-on experience of how we predict floods and why these events are happening more often. The panel discussion will also explore the big question: are we doing enough to protect ourselves?”
Professor Cloke has also participated in the Festival of Tomorrow Podcast: with Professor Elizabeth Kendon from Bristol University and the MET Office. They discuss the models and maps that are used to predict the future climate, where extreme flooding will happen, and how new technology in climate science can save lives.
, which runs from 10-22 February 2025, is an annual celebration of science, technology, and the arts, featuring shows, panels, installations, and hands-on activities. Last year, the festival attracted 23,000 visitors, including families who wouldn’t typically engage with science events.
The Finale Event (21-22 February), held at The Deanery Academy in Wichelstowe, will bring together interactive exhibits, expert talks, and hands-on workshops to engage audiences of all ages.
