The Woman with the Secret Typewriter

Mills & Boon romances have long been a beloved escape for millions of readers 鈥 but the women who actually wrote them often lived far from the glamorous worlds they created. Drawing on a remarkable treasure trove of material from the Museum of English Rural Life, Vic uncovers the hopes, struggles and everyday realities of the women who shaped one of Britain鈥檚 most iconic literary brands. Nature or Nourishment? Balancing biodiversity conservation and food security

We鈥檙e living in an era of rapid environmental change. Wildlife and ecosystems are declining, while climate change and a growing global population are placing increasing strain on our food systems. Given these pressures, it鈥檚 easy to assume that protecting nature and feeding people are competing priorities 鈥 but are they?

Drawing on research from the UK, Europe and South India, this public talk by Professor Deepa Senapathi will explore how farmers and policymakers are using nature friendly farming methods to support the beneficial insects that underpin our food systems. Rather than relying on a 鈥渙ne size fits all鈥 approach, Professor Senapathi will show why local context matters, and how thoughtful choices can create genuine win-win solutions for both people and the natural world.

Join Dr Frederic Ponten for a talk on his new book! An entire forgotten corpus of US writing on the Nazi German enemy boomed in a matter of a few years, peaked during World War II, and collapsed within months of the war ending. For a fleeting moment in history, significant parts of the intellectual world in the United States converged to provide a cool-headed analysis of the Nazi threat and a clear identification of the enemy.

Starting in 1944, these writers also offered an elaborate plan for a postwar re-education that would transform the National Socialist German nation into a democratic ally. Readers alarmed by the current resurgence of authoritarianism will learn from the work of those activists who analyzed Nazi Germany during World War II.

This book, the first monographic study of this literature, provides pointed introductions to the main intellectual projects, their unique collaborative spirit, and their epochal results.

The film follows the journey of 26 plundered royal treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey exhibited in Paris, now being returned to Benin. What happens when objects from the pre-colonial past turn up in present-day Benin? What do these objects mean now? If these objects could speak, what would they say?

Dahomey comments powerfully on themes of post-coloniality, belonging and migration, national histories, and the role of objects in shaping our identities.

All are welcome to attend this film, which will be followed by a Q&A and drinks reception. This screening is hosted by the Screen Work Group in collaboration with the Nation of Refugee project.

What's the difference between a Singers Night and a Theme Night?

A Singers Night is a friendly informal gathering where you, the audience, provide the entertainment. Everyone has a chance to perform, 鈥 a song, a tune, a poem, a story or a joke. All standards are acceptable. You can of course just sit back and be entertained by others if you wish. You will all get a warm welcome.

A Theme Night is much the same as a Singers Night except we try to link the songs etc. to the theme, however tenuous the link may be.

Come and surprise with your songs related to "Songs and Tunes of Ireland".

Pascal Rog茅 and Elena Font recently formed a duo by uniting their common passion for sharing music and emotions.

Often side by side, sometimes face to face, they like to use their complicity to explore the different facets of their instrument and the richness of this intimate and poetic French repertoire as well as, the colourful and harmonious Spanish music, two worlds that correspond perfectly with their sensitivity... and with their origins!

Sharing the keyboard of a piano is a very special musical experience, which requires great intimacy between the performers and a deep knowledge of the two personalities, but it is also an intense pleasure to exchange ideas, sounds and emotions to transmit them to the public thanks to two hearts and four hands.
